Students are required to take at least two courses of the same foreign language, whether it is Latin or Spanish. Students will begin by acquiring basic knowledge of the language they are taking through an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. The more classes you take in a certain language, the more in depth you will be able to read, write, understand, and speak the language proficiently. While learning the language, the student will also acquire knowledge on the culture and literature.

Spanish I:

Credit: 1

Grades: 9-12

Weight: S

Prerequisite: None

Acquire basic knowledge of the Spanish language through an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. Study vocabulary and acquire a basic understanding of parts of speech and sentence structure. Learn about the Hispanic culture.

 

Spanish II:

Credit: 1

Grades: 10-12

Weight: S

Prerequisite: Spanish I

Continue your emphasis on listening and speaking skills with the addition of reading and writing. Study grammatical structure and major verb tenses, along with essential sentence structure necessary to use Spanish in everyday lives. Continue vocabulary building and Spanish cultural activities.

 

Spanish III:

Credit: 1

Grades: 11- 12

Weight: H

Prerequisite: Spanish II

Study reading and writing skills and the development of oral proficiency. Learn more complex grammar patterns, as well as Spanish literature.

 

Spanish IV:

    Credit: 1

Grades: 12

Weight: H

Prerequisite: Spanish III

Participate in an advance study of the Spanish language, culture, and literature, and prepare for college placement exams.

 

Latin I:

   Credit: 1

   Grades: 9-12

   Weight: S

   Prerequisite: None

Acquire basic knowledge of the Latin language through an emphasis on reading, listening, and speaking skills. Study vocabulary and acquire a basic understanding of parts of speech and sentence structure. Study major verb tenses, verb conjugation groups, noun and adjective declensions.  Learn about Roman geography, history, and culture, as well as basic Greco-Roman mythology. Compare ancient and modern cultures. 

 

Latin II:

   Credit: 1

   Grades: 10-12

   Weight: H

   Prerequisite:  Latin I

Continue your emphasis on reading, listening, and speaking skills with the addition of writing. Begin study of Latin texts in translation and in Latin. Continue study of grammatical structures, including passive voice and relative pronouns,  Continue vocabulary building and study of Greco-Roman culture. 

 

Latin III:

   Credit: 1

   Grades: 11-12

   Weight:  H

   Prerequisite:  Latin II

Study reading and writing skills and the development of oral proficiency. Learn more complex grammar patterns, including the subjunctive mood, as well as Latin literature, particularly in Latin. 

 

Latin IV:

   Credit: 1

   Grades:  12

   Weight:  H

   Prerequisite:  Latin III

Participate in an advanced study of the Latin language, culture, and literature, and prepare for college placement exams.
